OK so its now called Ho Chi Minh, but i’m old school so its Saigon to me, plus it sounds far more romantic than Ho Chi Minh.
Walking around town, just three little words but for the tired Englishman its quite a tough task, especially after a few Saigons.
Crossing the road is the big issue the trick is just to walk – forget everything you learnt in school – Don’t Stop – Don’t look – Don’t listen…just take the plunge and step out, and as if by magic a force field surrounds you and cycles, scooters and taxis just swerve out of your way. do not loose your rhythm, one hesitant move can see you under a bus or being dragged down the road by a scooter.
So, you may say – stick to the pavement and cross at designated crossing areas – NO – im afraid not, the scooters even mount the pavements at about 30MPH so again if you loose your rhythm or do anything out of the ordinary – smack your another Vietnamese road statistic.
